Anna Heidinger

Anna Heidinger, born August 6, 1934, in Croatia, passed away leaving behind a life defined by resilience, creativity, and deep devotion to her family and community.

Anna’s early years were shaped by the challenges of wartime Europe. She was born and raised in Vinkovci, Croatia. Post-WWII, she moved to Graz, Austria where she worked. Following the war, she immigrated together with her parents and siblings to the United States in 1952, settling first in Lester, Iowa. Soon after, they made their home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Anna would reside for the rest of her life.

In Sioux Falls, Anna worked as a nanny for Bob Swift and his family, where her caring nature and strong work ethic were evident. In 1956, she met the love of her life, Gernot Heidinger. The couple was married on November 6, 1959, in Sioux Falls, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love and commitment. Together, they raised three sons: David, Robert, and Michael.

While raising her family, Anna combined her entrepreneurial spirit with her passion for baking by operating a wedding and event cake business out of her home. Her cakes became a meaningful part of many celebrations in the community. She also continued working in retail, including at Fantle’s and Younkers Department Stores, until her retirement.

Anna found joy in life’s simple and creative pleasures. She loved gardening, traveling, and crafting, and was always happiest when creating something beautiful for others. She was also a woman of faith and community, and was among the founding group who helped establish the German Christmas service at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Anna is survived by her beloved husband, Gernot; her sons, David, Robert, and Michael Heidinger; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her brothers, Siegfried Miller and Peter Mueller. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Maria Haberer and Helene Reil.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, in the Chapel at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Avenue, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the service at 11:00 a.m. Refreshments will be provided following the service.

Anna will be remembered for her strength, kindness, and the love she so generously shared with her family, friends, and community.
