Arlene V. Hanger, 90, of Sioux Falls, passed away at Avera Heart Hospital on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
Arlene Viola Boekhoff was born on February 20, 1934, to parents John and Cristine (Griebel) Boekhoff in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She attended public school and attended Washington High School.
At 16, Arlene met her future husband, Richard L. Hanger, while working in a small café. They were married on August 12, 1950, in Luverne, Minnesota. Despite being told they were too young and that their marriage wouldn’t last, the couple enjoyed 73 beautiful years together before Richard passed away in 2023.
Arlene was a devoted wife and a loving mother. As a stay-at-home mom, she dedicated her time to raising her three children: Cynthia, Cathy, and Rick. Throughout her life, Arlene worked as a bookkeeper for various small businesses in Sioux Falls. Later, she served as the treasurer for the Women's Bowling Association, a position she held for 12 years before retiring in 1991.
Family meant everything to Arlene. Most summer weekends were spent at the campground, where they enjoyed the great outdoors and spent quality time together. After retiring, Arlene and Richard traveled across the country in their motorhome, creating lasting memories along the way. Additionally, Arlene took pleasure in being a Girl Scout leader.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Cynthia Tuch, Cathryn (Roger) Krumvieda, and Richard (Carol) Hanger; seven grandchildren, Jill (Travis) Damron, Jason Tuch, Chris Krumvieda, Bryan Krumvieda, Brent Krumvieda, Melissa (Jon) Magyar, and Carrie (Ben Carson) Hanger; and ten great-grandchildren.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cristine Boekhoff; her beloved husband, Richard L. Hanger; son-in-law, Paul Tuch; sister, Doris Wyant; and brothers, Orval Boekhoff and Vernon Boekhoff.
