Blake Thomas Gambrel, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away on August 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, kindness, generosity, and love that touched countless lives. To know Blake was to know a gentle giant with a warm smile, a generous heart, and a genuine interest in others.
A family directed Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, at East Side Baptist Church in Sioux Falls. A luncheon and time of remembrance and fellowship will follow the service.
Blake was born on October 2, 1955, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Donald Gambrel and Alice Bentley. During his childhood, the family lived in Fargo, North Dakota; Edina, Minnesota; and East Cobb County, Georgia. These experiences helped shape his welcoming spirit and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Blake graduated from Edina East High School in Edina, Minnesota, and went on to earn a degree in Sociology from the University of Georgia. A proud Bulldog, Blake remained a devoted fan throughout his life and never passed up an opportunity to cheer on his beloved team with a spirited "Go Dawgs!"
Following college, Blake spent most of his career in retail. He managed shoe stores in South Carolina and Georgia before joining Walmart in Kennesaw, Georgia. In 2005, Blake transferred with Walmart to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he made his home and continued his career until retiring in 2022. Throughout his years in retail, Blake was known for his strong work ethic, steady leadership, and genuine care for both coworkers and customers.
While Blake's career was important to him, it was his relationships that truly defined his life. He was known as an incredibly thoughtful gift giver, finding joy in making others feel special and appreciated. He had a remarkable knack for choosing the perfect gift, demonstrating how well he knew and loved the people in his life.
His faith was the foundation of his life. After relocating to Sioux Falls, Blake became a devoted member of Eastside Baptist Church. Since 2005, he faithfully served as a greeter and usher, welcoming everyone who entered with a sincere smile and kind word. Blake was especially beloved by children. He greeted kids with high fives, laughter, and encouragement. Children naturally gravitated toward him, and Blake delighted in every interaction. Simply put, kids loved Blake, and Blake loved kids.
Family was one of his greatest treasures. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved. Blake especially embraced his role as the "Fun Uncle" to his nieces, nephews, and the many children who were fortunate enough to know him. Whether sharing stories, cheering from the sidelines, giving thoughtful gifts, or simply making time for a conversation, Blake created memories that will be treasured for generations.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Donna Gambrel; his nephews, Tim (Stacey) Phillips, Tod (Lea) Phillips, and Tom Gambrel; eleven great-nieces and nephews; and ten great-great-nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his cherished church family, many dear friends, and countless lives made better by his kindness and faithfulness.
Blake was preceded in death by his father, Donald Gambrel; his mother, Alice Bentley Gambrel; his older brother, Mark Gambrel and his younger brother, Kirk Gambrel.
Blake's life was a testament to servant-hearted love. Through his faith, generosity, and genuine care for others, he made the world a warmer and more welcoming place. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
Matthew 25:23
