Carol Lorraine Stewart

 

Carol Lorraine (Fahrni) Stewart, 89, passed peacefully at home under hospice care on November 29, 2024 in Lake City, FL.  A visitation will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday December 14, 2024 at the George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls followed by a brief service at 2:00. A private interment with family will follow at Hills of Rest. 

Carol was born in Deadwood, SD and grew up in a family of six children in Faulkton, SD. She married Roger Stewart in 1954. They lived briefly in Arizona and New Jersey when Roger was in the service, before moving to Sioux Falls in 1958 where they raised their five children.  They were members of First Baptist Church and First Free Evangelical Church until becoming full time residents in Lake City, Florida in 2015. 

Carol was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker before working as an administrative assistant at what was then Sioux Falls College where she also received her associates degree. She tried her hand at entrepreneurship, operating Carol’s Gallery and Gifts on the east side of Sioux Falls for several years. She took great joy in meeting with and selling works by local artists and artisans.

Carol took up tennis at age 30 and quickly excelled. She accumulated many of her trophies with doubles partner Jacque Gustafson, including several state championships. She was inducted into the SD Tennis Hall of Fame in 1997. Her competitive spirit extended into duplicate bridge, table tennis, and family games.

She is survived by her husband, Roger; children, Kay Bahnson (Bahne), Kim Corker (Jim), Scott Stewart (Pam), Doug Stewart, and Anne Larson (Mike); 21 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; brothers, Gary Fahrni (Carol), Robert Fahrni (Dorothy), Kay Ashmore (Tom), and Lavonna Temple.  

She is preceded in death by parents, Robert and Beatrice Fahrni; daughter-in-law, Denise Stewart; brother, Belvin Fahrni; in-laws, Ora Temple, Vonnie Griffith, Shirley Fahrni, Gordon and Dee Stewart, David and Fran Stewart, and Myron and Betty Fillbach.
