Dewayne L. Callies

Dewayne Lawrence Callies, known as Dewey, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away at the age of 69. Born on June 21, 1954, to Dewayne R. Callies and Myrna (McFarlane) and attended West Central, Class of 1972. Dewey’s life was a rich tapestry of adventure and accomplishment.

Dewey earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Accounting with a focus on Finance from Augustana University, graduating Cum Laude in 1985. His hard work and dedication were recognized when he passed the CPA exam on his first attempt—a feat so notable that Augustana University personally congratulated him. He has worked in healthcare finance.

Early on, Dewey's passion for mechanics was evident. His self-taught skills led him to race his 1968 Chevelle at Thunder Valley Dragway, where he held track record—a testament to his mastery and spirit.

Dewey's love for the open road and camaraderie led him to become a revered member of the motorcycle community. As a H.O.G. Charter member, State Rally Director, and Chapter Director, he lived for the thrill of the ride. His dedication to safety and skill was demonstrated through teaching AMA motorcycle riders’ courses and Harley Davidson Riders Edge courses, where he also received an award for his riding skills. His favorite motorcycle over the years was his blue 2002 HD Screamin Eagle CVO Wide Glide. His first bike was a 1964 Honda Super 90.

Dewey's heart found its match in Sarah. Their fateful meeting on February 16, 1974, led to a supportive and loving marriage in 1977. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Sandra, in 1986, and grandson, Edward, in 2023, both joyous additions to their lives.

As a hunter, Dewey enjoyed many seasons with Ruby, the family's chocolate lab, at his side. His record of 60 pheasants in 2007, including an albino pheasant at Koss shooting area, were proud moments he shared with family and friends.

Dewey's hobbies included restoring Tonka trucks, with a particular fondness for the John Morrell truck. His enthusiasm for life extended to camping and boating with his 1974 red metal flake Glastron speed boat. Once even water skied on Wall Lake the first day of spring thaw. Camping trips were a family affair, with favorite spots across South Dakota from Big Stone Lake to Custer State Park, memories etched in the tranquility of nature. Dewey had a curious mind. "If it's not broke, take it apart to see how it works!" A motto that spoke to his hands-on approach to life.

A man of skill and unlimited enthusiasm, Dewey leaves behind a legacy of love and learning. He will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his wife Sarah, daughter Sandra (Brandon Eliason) and grandson Edward, sister Darla (Brian) Lambertz, brother Wyatt (Kelli) Callies, sister Debbie (Kelly) Pool, sister-in-law Katy Blanchar, brother-in-law Paul Blanchar, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and many good friends.
