Donald Dewar Kerr of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on February 20, 2025, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls. He was 97 years old and was surrounded by his loved ones on the evening he passed. Donald is now at peace in heaven with his Savior, where “there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4). Donald was born to Thomas Watson Kerr and Jessie Dewar Kerr on April 23, 1927, in Carstairs, Scotland. When Donald was only six weeks old, his family boarded a ship in Scotland and immigrated to Canada. He spent the majority of his younger years in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Brantford, Ontario, and Windsor, Ontario, until he moved to Warren, MI at the age of 36. Donald served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, and then the reserves, totaling almost 20 years. Donald was a tool designer at Bendix for two years, and then worked for thirty years as a process engineer at Chrysler and Chrysler Defense, which was then sold to General
Dynamics Information Technology. Don retired from General Dynamics IT in 1987. While working, Donald earned an associate degree in Engineering Technology from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan.On June 27, 1964, Don married Evelyn Ozella Kerr and became a stepfather to her daughter, Sharon. The family lived in Warren, Michigan, where Don was actively involved in the community. For more than 40 years, he was a committed member of Redeemer Baptist Church, singing in the
choir for decades, and was the church’s bookkeeper for many years. In 2008, Don and Evelyn moved to Trail Ridge Senior Living Community in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to be closer to family. Donald was a man of deep faith, and committed much of his time to service. He served on the Trail Ridge Association Board and the Spiritual Life Committee for many years. Donald loved golf, singing hymns, doing crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy and the Detroit Tigers. Donald is survived by his stepdaughter, Sharon Stoltenow, and her husband, Terry, of Harrisburg, SD; his granddaughters, Susan (Stoltenow) Bill and her husband, Jeremy, of Sioux Falls, SD, and
Caren (Stoltenow) Schantz and her husband, Joey, of Glen Ullin, ND; and his great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Elliana Bill of Sioux Falls, SD, Peyton Schantz of Fargo, ND, and Gavin Schantz of Glen Ullin, ND. He is also survived by his nephews Jeff, Tod and Scott Kerr, all of Windsor, Ontario and nephew, Danny Kimbell of Fulton, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Jessie Kerr, his wife, Evelyn, and his brother, Thomas Watson Kerr and his wife, Jacqueline Kerr.
