Doris Lorraine Hoiland

Doris Hoiland, 100, of Brandon, SD, passed away on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 29, 2025 at Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Burial will take place at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will take place one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Doris Lorraine Hoiland was born on October 31, 1925, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Frank and Alice (Blood) Powell. The family resided in Brandon, SD, where Doris attended school through her junior year, before the family moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1943. Doris graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland in 1944.

Doris married Walter Hoiland on September 3, 1944, in Garretson, SD. They later divorced. To this union, two children were born. Doris worked as a sales clerk, in women’s wear, at several stores in Sioux Falls. Later in her life, she worked in the Food Service department at McKennan Hospital for ten years.

Doris loved flowers and music and was active in band and choirs. Doris was also active in Bible Studies and Church activities, where she worked as a Senior Companion.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Bonnie Rae (Rodney) Anderson of Brentwood, TN; son, Darrel Eugene (Mickie) Hoiland of Brandon, SD; grandsons, Lee (Heather) Anderson of Old Hickory, TN, and Jason “Jay” Anderson of Brentwood, TN. Doris is also survived by her special friend, Marilyn Mahoney.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Curtis, Kenneth (Cora), and Merle (Connie) Powell; sisters, Artis (Marshall) Hoiland, Phyllis (Melvin) Mehus, Audrey (Sidney) Nelson, and Darlene (Stanley) Reit; and half-brother, Mervin Powell.
