It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drew Alan Niedert, loving husband, father and proud U.S. Navy veteran, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 10 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls. Interment with full military honors will be in Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls. The family welcomes all who wish to pay their respects and share in celebrating Drew’s life.
Born on March 28, 1958, Drew was the oldest son of Dean Alan Niedert and Ann Lea (Wald) Niedert. He attended school in Sioux Falls, SD and graduated from Washington High School.
Drew proudly served in the United States Navy for over 20 years, where he dedicated himself to defending his nation and supporting his fellow sailors. During his distinguished career, Drew earned numerous commendations for his bravery, leadership, and commitment. He traveled the world, participating in key missions and developing lifelong friendships with his fellow servicemen and women. His steadfast service to the Navy was a reflection of his honor, integrity, and love for his country.
After retiring from the Navy, Drew transitioned to a career in civil service with the Highway Patrol continuing his dedication to community and country. He also worked for Lifescape in Sioux Falls and brought joy and comfort to the residents he worked with. He was known for his strong work ethic, leadership, and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Drew was a devoted husband to his wife of 5 years, Carol Niedert, and a loving father to his daughters Jessica Niedert and Katie (Sean) Salyer. He adored his granddaughters Laura Salyer, Hannah Moon and Madeline Salyer. He found immense joy throughout his life in spending time with his family and friends. Drew’s love for his family was immeasurable, and his role as a father and grandfather was his most cherished accomplishment.
Drew will be remembered for his quick wit, unwavering kindness, and deep sense of loyalty to those he loved. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, love, and service to others that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Drew is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughters, Jessica and Katie; granddaughters, Laura, Hannah and Madeline; his mother, Ann Lea; his brother, Jay; and several nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He is also remembered by his first wife, Katherine Hanstein, with whom he shared many significant years. He is preceded in death by his father, Dean Niedert.
