Esther Vogel passed away peacefully after a long illness on December 24, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Esther was born on February 25, 1940, in Hoven, South Dakota, to Peter and Helen Sautner. She grew up in Hoven, where she cultivated her deep appreciation for family and community. On June 16, 1958, she married the love of her life, Leroy Vogel, beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned 66 years. They built their life on a farm west of Hoven, creating a loving home filled with warmth and laughter. In 1986, they relocated to Mobridge, South Dakota, where Esther forged lifelong friendships and embraced new experiences.
Esther and Leroy shared a passion for travel, exploring many wonderful destinations throughout their years together. Her life was enriched by her deep connection with her family and friends, whom she treasured above all else. Esther's unwavering faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with strength and guidance throughout her journey. She had a particular fondness for frogs, often sharing her love for the acronym F.R.O.G., which stood for 'Forever Rely On God,' a mantra that resonated deeply with her faith and inspired those around her. She relied on her faith during challenging times and inspired others with her devotion and grace. A gifted gardener, Esther had a remarkable green thumb and nurtured countless vibrant flowers, creating beauty wherever she went. She found joy in watching birds and squirrels at her bird feeders, delighting in the simple pleasures of nature.
An avid reader, Esther spent countless hours immersed in books, finding solace and inspiration in the written word. She was a source of wisdom, kindness, and unwavering love, leaving an indelible mark on everyone she met.
Grateful for having shared Esther's life are her husband LeRoy Vogel; 5 children, Kathy Vogel, Daniel (Lexie) Vogel, Caroline (Marty) Eriksen, Diane (Scott) Kovarna, Joyce (David) Schmidt; 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; two siblings, Don Sautner and Sr. Adele Sautner; and numerous extended family members.
Esther was proceeded in death by her parents Helen and Peter Sautner, granddaughter Norah Pauly, brother Richard Sautner and two son-in-laws Marty Reuer and Chris Blades.
A celebration of Esther's life will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 10:30 am with burial to follow in the mausoleum at Hills of Rest Cemetery before going to Dow Rummel for continued fellowship and lunch in the Great Room. Family will be present on Thursday, January 2, 2025, for visitation at St. Michael's Catholic Church from 4:00-5:00 pm with a prayer service to begin at 5:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the AHB Public Library in Mobridge, SD, located at 521 N Main St., 57601, honoring Esther's generous spirit and love for her community. Esther Vogel's legacy of love, compassion, and resilience will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
