Faye Elaine Boom

Faye Elaine Boom, of rural Sioux Falls, SD died Friday December 13, 2024 at Touchmark All Saints Retirement Community.  Her funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 17th at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.  She will be buried at Hills of Rest Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at George Boom Funeral Home Monday, December 16, 2024 beginning at 5:00 PM.  The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Faye Elaine Anderson was born January 21, 1927 to Alfred M. Anderson and Abby (Schneiderman) Anderson at their farm near Worthing, SD. She attended country school until WWII when the family moved to Belleview, NE where her father worked in the bomber plant.  She graduated from Belleview High School in 1945 and shortly thereafter they moved to Sioux Falls.  She attended the South Dakota Beauty Academy, now known as Stewart School.  After graduation, she worked as a hairdresser and eventually opened her own salon, Faye’s Beauty Shop.

She met an enterprising young funeral director named George Boom and they were married in 1950 at East Side Lutheran Church.  The newlyweds moved to New Ulm, MN where George was employed at a funeral home owned by his uncle.  After about four years, the Banton Funeral Home in Sioux Falls came up for sale and they purchased it.  Faye continued to operate her beauty shop and that’s what kept bread on the table during the early years of the funeral home.  When they built the new funeral home in 1964, they included space for Faye’s Beauty Shop where she continued to run it for several years.

She became an essential part of George Boom Funeral Home.  She kept the books, answered phone calls in the middle of the night, hosted visitations, helped with funerals, did the hair for the deceased among many other duties.  She really enjoyed road trips for the funeral home.  She and her mother would grab a thermos of coffee and go no matter what the weather.  The funeral home would not be what it is today without her dedication and sacrifice.

She had the gift of hospitality.  Whether it was serving lunches after a funeral or the many get togethers her and George hosted over the years, she loved them all.  She loved the fish boils, corn feeds and especially the annual Christmas party with the Split Rock Volunteer Fire Department and friends.   She liked impromptu gatherings and never even complained when my buddies and I would “drop in” at meal time on the way to a rodeo.

She loved her family, especially her husband of 74 years.  They were blessed to be able to live in their home until about a year ago when they had to move to Touchmark.  Even then, she would sit all day with him in his room to keep track of him.  Her grandchildren were a top priority with her and she wanted to know what they were doing.

We are all sad right now.  But we grieve for ourselves, not her.  She loved Jesus and we can only imagine the Christmas she is celebrating this year.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, George; one son, David Boom and his wife, Laurie, Montrose SD; four grandchildren, Jennifer Newman and her husband, Matt, Sioux Falls, SD, Sara Wilson and her husband, Brendan, Valley City, ND, Naomi Shafer, Hartford, SD and Jacob Boom and his wife, Carly, Montrose, SD; five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Faye was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Abby Anderson and sister, Janice Thue.
