Grace Lillian Peters was born on August 5, 1924, to John and Nannie (Ertmoed) Peters in Harrisburg, South Dakota. The family later lived in Alvord, Iowa, before settling in Sioux Falls.
She attended Washington High School, graduating in May of 1942. Grace worked at the Manchester Cookie Company, Morrells, and later at a grocery store/café—where she met the love of her life, Kenneth.
Grace and Kenneth were married on Wednesday, May 25, 1949, in Sioux Falls. Together, they raised four children: Jean, Joan, Joy, and John. Grace cherished her role as a stay-at-home mother, caring not only for her own family but also for neighborhood children and providing daycare for friends’ children. She was also a foster mother to 134 children through Catholic Social Services. During this busy time, Grace baked countless birthday and wedding cakes. She made wedding cakes for most of her children and grandchildren over the decades.
Grace was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. She served as a Brownie Leader, PTA President, and Sunday School teacher. She loved baking, sewing, and spending time with children and pets, all who were instinctively drawn to her.
She later worked in the baking department at Ideal Hardware and at the Sioux Valley Hospital Daycare. She also volunteered her time at the Good Samaritan Center and Avera McKennan Hospital.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Jean (Donald) Anderson, Joan (Bruce) Feistner, Joy (Rick) Baldwin, and John (Kathy) MacArthur. Grace is also survived by her grandchildren: Heidi Galer, Michaela Anderson, Jaclyn (Justin) Kulbel, Carrie (Kevin) Jaeger, Adam Feistner, Katie Snyder, Amber Baldwin, Brett (Emily) Baldwin, Kenton (Kaylee) MacArthur, Kourtney (Caleb) Flier, and Kurtis MacArthur; and her great-grandchildren: Riley and Lauren Galer, Avery Anderson, Emelia and Greta Kulbel, Lucas Snyder, Corbin Baldwin, Brenna, Faye, and Benjamin Baldwin, Scout and Dru MacArthur, and Rose Flier. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Alma Peters; special family friends Sara (Justin) Waddell and Sean Goldammer; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nannie Peters; husband Kenneth; her siblings Hattie, Alfred, Evelyn, Donald, and Robert; sister-in-law Darlene Peters; foster son Keith; grandson-in-law Matt Galer; and great-granddaughter Addisen Snyder.
Grace will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We will forever cherish the memories of her remarkable life and celebrate the profound impact she had on so many. She was truly an “Amazing Grace.”
