Grace Sprouse-Barnes
Grace Sprouse Barnes, age 95, died on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at Edgewood Prairie Crossing Assisted Living Community. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 (Grace’s 96th birthday) with her family present to greet friends beginning at 1:00 PM followed by her service at 2:00 PM at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls.
Grace Boerema was born on September 16, 1929 in Sheldon, Iowa to Ike and Gertie (Nagel) Boerema. She was raised and received her education in Sheldon. Following her education, Grace made her home in Sioux Falls, SD. Grace was blessed with four children. Grace’s husband, Garold D. Sprouse died in 1964. She was then united in marriage with Gerald Barnes on February 8, 1968 and welcomed his five children and many grandchildren into her family. Gerald passed away in 1999.
Alongside raising her family, Grace worked clerical jobs at Pacesetter and Greenthumb until retiring at the age of 70.
Grace had a lifelong passion of horses, riding and showing horses from an early age, she passed along this passion to her children, owning multiple horses and taking her children to shows and rodeos on the weekends. She also had a passion for fishing, teaching her children to fish and appreciate the great outdoors. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting; making all of her grandchildren their baby blankets. Spending the last seven years living at Edgewood Prairie Crossing Assisted Living Community, Grace loved playing bingo on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and playing black jack on Fridays. Above all, Grace loved her family, she went out of her way to make everyone feel comfortable with her kindness and generosity. Grace was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend who will be deeply missed.
Grateful for having shared her life are four children, Ed Sprouse, De Smet, SD, Dale Sprouse and his wife, Sandy, Blaine, MN, Patty Barnes Van Dyke and her husband, Jeff, Norfolk, NE and Julie Sprouse Mork and her husband, David, Sioux Falls, SD; nine grandchildren, Shannon Sprouse, Brian (Melissa) Sprouse, Amy (Bryan) Parker, Matt (Sena) Sprouse, Sarah (Andy) Steele, Tyler Van Dyke, Thomas Van Dyke, Joshua (Amber) Mork and Chris Mork; great grandchildren, Lauren, Jackson, Hensley, Alayna, Oliver, Lennon, Braxxton, Emerly, Landon, Azlie, Brynlie and Otto; many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ike and Gertie Boerema; two husbands, Garold Sprouse and Gerald Barnes; one son, Jerry Sprouse; brother. John Boerema; and sister, Tena Dean.
