James (Jim) Aloysius Even, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and leader, passed away on January 6, 2026. Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on August 9, 1939, to Aloysius J. Even (AJ) and Edith M. Even. Jim was one of ten children-blessed with five sisters (Nancy, Judy, Barbara, Virginia and Elizabeth) and four brothers (Tom, Bill, Don and Charlie) - and grew up in a close-knit family that shaped his generous spirit and lifelong sense of humor.
Jim attended K-12 at Cathedral Elementary and High School, where he was active in athletics and excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He graduated from South Dakota State University, setting the foundation for a distinguished professional life. He married the love of his life, Judi, beginning a remarkable partnership that spanned 64 years.
Jim began his career as a claims adjuster with The Hartford Insurance Group and remained loyal to the company throughout his entire career. His work took his young family through several regional Midwest locations, and in 1977 they settled in Simsbury, Connecticut, when Jim joined the home office. Through hard work, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to excellence, he rose through the ranks-serving as Quality Control Manager, Chief of Staff to the Chairman, and ultimately Senior Vice President of Claims (Worldwide). Admired by colleagues and friends alike, Jim's leadership and character left a lasting impact on those who worked with him.
In 1994, at the age of 54, Jim retired early and embraced a long, active retirement with Judi. Together, they played tennis daily with friends at Westward Ho Country Club, entertained loved ones often, and delighted in discovering favorite restaurants-making friends wherever they went. A passionate football fan, Jim especially loved the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and proudly passed that tradition from his father to his sons and grandchildren.
Handsome, fun-loving, and quick-witted, Jim had a signature "Even humor" that he shared generously-instilling laughter and warmth into every gathering. Above all, he treasured his family. He is dearly loved by his wife of 64 years, Judi; his sons and their families, Jim and Melissa from Sioux Falls, and their sons Jimmy and Jay; and Jeff and Carey from Simsbury, CT , and their children Jeffrey, Matthew, Bradford, and Rebecca; his brothers Bill (Liz), Don (Carol) and Charlie (Sharon); sisters Judy, Barbara, Ginny (Jeff) and Lizzy ; as well as his extended family and many friends. He is predeceased by his parents Aloysius (AJ) and Edith, his brother Tom and sister Nancy.
Jim will be dearly missed. We will cherish the time we had with him and carry forward his example of love, loyalty, and joy.
