James Albert Kvernes, fondly known as Jim, passed away at the age of 91, just days after remaining active and engaged with the people and activities he loved. Born on August 31, 1933, on the family farm near Howard, South Dakota—the very place his father was born in a pioneer sod shanty in the 1880s—Jim lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service to others.
Jim was the son of Albert and Agnes (Holter) Kvernes and was educated in Howard public schools. He graduated in 1955 from South Dakota State University with a degree in economics. Shortly after, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Finance Corps, serving his country with honor for several years. After his military service, Jim married the love of his life, LeAnn Callies, in 1956, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned nearly seven decades. Together, they raised their son, Thomas (Tom), in a home filled with love, laughter, and a deep commitment to family.
In 1962, Jim embarked on a fulfilling career in the accounting department at John Morrell & Co., where he worked for 32 years, retiring in 1998. His retirement celebration, held at his home, drew an incredible 142 guests—testament to the many lives he touched throughout his career. Never one to sit still, Jim began a second career as a courier for Sanford Health, a role he loved, driving to Luverne, MN, and surrounding towns daily for an impressive 17 years until retiring in 2020.
Jim was a man of boundless energy and unwavering kindness. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, often assisting his wife LeAnn with cooking, grilling, and even house cleaning. He enjoyed helping his son Tom with his successful homebuilding business, taking on tasks like painting, bookkeeping, and taxes with enthusiasm and precision. A dedicated volunteer, Jim ushered at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church for 15 years and also drove the parish cruiser for two years. He was an active supporter of Augustana University athletics, attending countless games and events as an Augie Booster alongside LeAnn, a passion introduced to them by his beloved aunt and uncle, Milt and Clara Harvey.
Jim’s hobbies and social life were as full as his heart. He and LeAnn were league bowlers for eight years, making lasting friendships along the way. Jim also worked part-time as a ticket taker at the Sioux Falls Arena and Coliseum for 15 years, including for the iconic Elvis Presley concert on June 2, 1977. He cherished weekends spent at his son’s Lake Madison home, especially the joy of watching Fourth of July fireworks.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, LeAnn; his loving son, Thomas (T.K.) Kvernes of Madison, SD; and many dear friends, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and an infant son.
Jim’s legacy is one of service, kindness, and love. His family farm, later gifted to Augustana College by the Kvernes family, stands as a testament to the values he held dear. Memorials may be directed to Augustana University or the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Foundation, organizations that were close to his heart.
Jim will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his faith.
