James Karl Palmer, known affectionately as Jim, passed away on February 6, 2025 following a short battle with cancer at the age of 76. A Graveside Service for Jim will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Following the service, a Celebration of Jim’s Life will take place at 1:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls.
Born on August 27, 1948, in Scotland, South Dakota, Jim spent his final years in Sioux Falls, where he left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Jim was a man of many interests, with a passion for collecting antiques, riding his bike on local trails, and tending to his beloved garden. An avid crossword puzzler, he found joy in the challenge of words and enjoyed the camaraderie of friends and family. He especially enjoyed yearly family reunions and spending quality time with his family. He was known for his love of food and was always eager to share a meal with those he cared for.
Throughout his life, Jim exemplified the qualities of a true gentleman. His social nature allowed him to engage with everyone he met, and he cherished the relationships he developed. In a remarkable act of love, Jim left behind his work and life in Southern California to return to South Dakota as a full-time caregiver for his mother. His time in Southern California was filled with cherished moments, especially his monthly camping trips with his Grandpa Palmer, which he looked forward to with great anticipation.
A proud graduate of Washington High School in Sioux Falls and Sioux Falls College, Jim earned a Bachelor's degree in Business. Although he never married, he found love later in life, which brought him immense happiness and many treasured memories despite the long-distance nature of the relationship.
Jim was an amazing uncle to his sister's children, Ryan and Megan , and he took great pride in his role as a caring and supportive figure in their lives. As a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church, Jim volunteered at the church and especially enjoyed working with the younger children.
Jim is survived by his sister Ruth Marie Johnson, nephew Ryan Johnson, niece Megan Stefonich, great-nephew Fox Stefonich, of Nevada and close first cousins, Bonnie McMullen and Norm McMullen. His gentle spirit, kind heart, and unwavering dedication to family and community will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Services forthcoming in April 2025, to be announced.
