Janet Irene Rist was born on March 13, 1940, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls to Sylvan and Gladys (Nelson) Langdon. Janet was baptized, confirmed, and married at Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Her strong Christian faith remained central throughout her life, and she was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church (Sioux Falls) and Blessed Redeemer Lutheran Church (Brandon) until her health began to decline following a diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis in 2005.

Janet attended Bancroft and Whittier Grade Schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1958. On April 14, 1962, she married the love of her life, Ardell Rist of rural Brandon, at Faith Lutheran Church. Together they raised two daughters, Nancy Jo and Anne Marie, who were the light of her life.

As a young girl, Janet loved roller skating, ice skating, swimming, baton twirling, cheerleading, and playing games with neighborhood friends. She was proud to participate in the Sioux Falls Ice Follies at Covell Lake.

When her children were young, she became an avid reader and continued her love of reading until the later years of her illness. Before moving into Brandon, she and Ardell had a large garden where they grew strawberries, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, rhubarb, and more. She joyfully canned the harvest from their garden to use throughout the year.

Janet was employed with the Credit Bureau of Sioux Falls and Nelson & Nelson CPAs.

Janet cherished her winters spent in Arizona and Florida where she and Ardell made many memories with family and friends.

Throughout her life, Janet formed and maintained close friendships with kids from her childhood neighborhood, colleagues at the Credit Bureau, fellow church members, and neighbors in Brandon, cherishing each of those friendships.

Above all, Janet was devoted to her family. She loved family gatherings and treasured every moment spent with her children and grandchildren. Her legacy of kindness, faith, and quiet strength will live on through them.

Janet is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Ardell; her daughters, Nancy Jo (Jason) Munson of Sioux Falls and Anne Marie (Chad) Streich of Lincoln, NE; her beloved grandchildren, Kyle (Amanda) Munson of Sioux Falls, Courtney (David) Wells of Wayzata, MN, Matthew (Carly) Munson of Sioux Falls, Zachary Streich of Omaha, NE, and Taylor Streich of Lincoln, NE. She is also survived by her brother, Roger (Marlene) Langdon of New Smyrna Beach, FL; her sister, Glenice Erickson of Menomonee Falls, WI; her sister-in-law, Sherri Langdon of Lakeville, MN; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvan and Gladys Langdon; her brothers, Doug and Dennis Langdon; her nephew, Curtis Ross Erickson; all her grandparents; and several beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Janet’s family would like to thank everyone who supported her throughout her life and illness. Her gentle spirit, warm heart, and unwavering faith will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
