Jon D. Skogen

Jon D. Skogen, age 59, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Monday, June 8th, 2026 at his home in Sioux Falls, SD.

Jon David Skogen was born on April 14, 1967, in Sioux Falls, to Clifford Skogen and Marlene (Williams) Skogen. Sioux Falls is where Jon called home; he was a life long resident of the community he grew up in, and the place he loved with his whole heart.

Jon graduated from Washington High School in 1985. After graduating, he very proudly served his country in the United States Army and was deployed during The Gulf War: Operation Desert Storm. Following his military service, Jon had two beautiful daughters, Jessica and Sydney, who he loved deeply.

Jon was involved in many career endeavors such as owning a pawn shop, bar co-ownership of JJ’s Billiards, but his pride was  founding and operating All American Construction, that reflected his deep love for his country and strong work ethic.

On July 11th, 2020, Jon was united in marriage with Julie (Kiggins). They share a beautiful daughter together, Montana Skogen. “Tanner” as Jon so lovingly called her, kept him forever young with her energetic spirit.

He later worked for Novak Sanitary Service, where he excelled at transporting roll off dumpsters and planned to retire.

With his competitive nature, Jon enjoyed playing pool and shooting darts which led him to win multiple State Championships and awards. He was a beloved teammate and competitor to everyone who had played a match with or against him. He was known for cheering others on with his favorite phrases, “Let’s go!” and “Come on!”. If you know, you know: Jon was everyone’s loudest cheerleader!

To know Jon was to know kindness. He was generous, loyal, and uplifting. Whether playing darts, shooting pool, listening to music, or spending time with family, Jon brought joy and energy into every room. He had a gift for making people feel valued, encouraged, and loved.

Jon believed in people deeply and spent his life lifting others up.

Above all, Jon was a loving father who showed up for every moment that mattered. He created safety, encouragement, and confidence for his children and grandchildren. He taught and instilled in them how to be kind, strong, and good to others.

His greatest legacy is not only what he did, but how he made people feel. Jon had a rare ability to leave every person better than he found them.

The measure of a life is not how much we gather for ourselves, but how much of ourselves we give to others. Jon gave freely- his time, his encouragement, his laughter, and his love. Those who knew him will forever carry a piece of that gift with them.

No one left a conversation with Jon feeling worse than when they arrived. He had a gift for making people feel valued, encouraged, and loved. That gift will remain his legacy.

Jon was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, veteran, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Julie Skogen; his daughters, Montana Skogen, Jessica (Matthew) Janecek, and Sydney Broders; and his eight cherished grandchildren: Jayke Janecek, Jentry Janecek, Jersey Janecek, Jerick Janecek, Mavrick Janecek, Johanna Janecek, Malachi Janecek, and Tillulah Broders.

He is also survived by his sister, June (Jim) McCarty; his brothers, Jerry Kappenman and Jeff Kappenman; his nephew Josh (Becca) Skogen; Aunt Sharon Stitch;  and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and close friends.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Skogen and Marlene Skogen; his brother, Jay Skogen and half-brother, James Kappenman; and his dear friend Tobin Johnson.
