It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Judy L. Roddel's peaceful passing on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the Sanford Hospice Foundation Cottage, surrounded by her loving family. Judy was 78 years old.
Born Judy Lorrayne Foss on January 1, 1947, at the start of a new year, she was the cherished daughter of Clifford and Marcella (Polzin) Foss in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Judy's educational journey began in public school, culminating in her graduation from Brandon Valley High School in 1965.
Driven by a desire to serve others, Judy pursued further education and earned her X-ray technician certification from the McKennan School of Radiology. Her career as an X-ray technician at the Medical X-ray Center, McKennan Hospital, and the Orthopedic Institute exemplified her commitment to helping those in need until her retirement.
On April 15, 1972, Judy married the love of her life, Ronald E. Roddel, at the First Congregational Church in Sioux Falls. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and joy, welcoming three wonderful children into their family. The loss of Ron in 2020 was a profound heartache for Judy, but she continued to embody strength and love for her family.
Family was everything to Judy, a testament to her generous spirit. She embraced every moment spent with her children, supporting them in their sporting events and school activities, proudly serving on the PTA and even earning a “Mother of the Year” award from the teachers. As a devoted grandmother, she found immense joy in attending her grandchildren's events, celebrating their achievements and milestones.
Judy had a special affinity for dachshund dogs, and even in her later years when she faced health challenges, she found comfort and joy in watching the rescued dachshund pups and dogs at her neighbor's home. Her warmth and compassion will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the cherished memories shared by family and friends.
Judy is survived by her children: Tom (Kristi) Roddel of Lincoln, NE; Cathie (Josh) Herbers of Sioux Falls; and Mary (Kevin) Knetsch of Sioux Falls. She also leaves behind seven adored grandchildren: Luke, Kylie, and Madelyn Roddel; Avery and Lane Herbers; and Keegan and Kendal Knetsch. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Jean Tysdal of Sioux Falls; her brother, Cliff (Peggy) Foss of Brandon, SD; and her cherished dachshunds, Jack and Grady.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Marcella Foss; her beloved husband, Ron Roddel; and her brother-in-law, Ron Tysdal.
