Madelene J. Holland

Madelene “Maddy” Jean Holland, age 96, (almost 97) died on Monday, July 27, 2026 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. A memorial service will be 11:00 AM on Friday, August 14, 2026 at Messiah New Hope Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Her family will be present to greet friends for a memorial visitation on Thursday, August 13, 2026 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. 

Madelene was born on August 25, 1929 in Duluth, Minnesota to Alven and Gertrude (Lindegren) Wedlund. She was raised and received her education in Proctor, MN where she proudly played the clarinet in the Proctor High School Marching Band, and graduated from high school. 

Maddy was united in marriage with Kenneth P. Holland on September 17, 1949 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor, MN. The couple made their home in International Falls, MN in 1955.  Maddy and Ken were blessed with five children, while Maddy worked as a nurse’s aide at the hospital. Ken passed away on December 7, 2005. Maddy then moved to Watertown, SD before coming to Sioux Falls, SD in 2013. 

Maddy was a woman of deep faith, she loved serving in various church groups, playing the piano and singing in the choir. She enjoyed baking, cooking and above all, spending time with her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be deeply missed.  

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Daniel Holland of Yankton, SD, Cynthia Lipponen and her husband, Lauri of Sioux Falls, SD, Charles Holland and his wife, Jamie of Monument, CO and Nancy Holland, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law, Diana Holland of Lakeland, FL; six grandchildren: Nicole (Aaron) Iatarola, Ben Holland, Sarah Holland, Kristin Holland, Matthew Blomquist and Christina Blomquist; three great grandchildren, Anthony Iatarola, Brianna Holland and Ryan Holland; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Holland in 2005; her son, Michael Holland; daughter-in-law, Virginia Holland; her parents, Alven and Gertrude Wedlund; brothers, Alven, Walter and Charles Wedlund; and three sisters, Violet Hamilton, Virginia Withrow and Nilda Haynes.
