Mary Kay Simon

Mary Kay Simon, 76, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at the Dougherty House.

Mary Kay was born on November 21, 1949 in Sioux Falls. She was the daughter of Harold C.Penney and Virginia M. Johnston. She received her education in Sioux Falls and was a graduate of Lincoln High school, Class of 1967.

She was married to Donald Storgaard, and together they welcomed their son, Gregory.  After their marriage ended, she later found love again and married Joseph Simon, with whom she continued to build a fulfilling life that included two step-children, Kenneth and Cari.

Mary Kay enjoyed a successful career and the blessings of lifelong friendships in the credit card banking profession, first with Citibank (21 years), with stops in Las Vegas, Seattle, and Albuquerque and later with Capital Card Services (14 years) in Sioux Falls, retiring in 2012.

Mary Kay was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and loved any quality time with family and friends.  Card games were a specialty with her granddaughters, with hundreds of rounds of Uno through the years.  Her loved ones remember her as kind, patient, loving, and generous - always quick to share a laugh or words of affirmation.  She was a model of strength and perseverance, first with Joe’s cancer diagnosis and later her chronic conditions.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Greg (Debra) Storgaard of Carrollton, TX, Cari (Joe) Woelich of Clarksville, TN, Becky (Bill) Kolesnik of Sebastian, FL, Kenneth Simon of Joint Base Andrews, MD; six grandchildren and two great- grandchildren; her siblings, Bob Penney of Eagle Point, OR and Nancy Peterson of Sioux Falls, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mary Kay was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Simon on January 19, 2016 and her brother Patrick Penney on January 6, 2014.

Services will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, with a Visitation from 4-6pm on Thursday, April 9 and a Celebration of Life on Friday, April 10 at 10:00 am.  She will be interned at Hills of Rest Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary Kay’s name to Wounded Warrior Project or Veterans Community Project of Sioux Falls.
