Odell Dwaine Meyer

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather Odell Dwaine Meyer went home to be with the Lord at age 93 on December 31, 2024.  Odell was the first born to Ole and Katie (Bunjer) Meyer on June 24, 1931 in Chancellor, SD. He attended rural public schools and Canton Lutheran Academy High School until his family moved to Sioux Falls where he met his wife of 69 years through church Youth Group at the First Church of God on 9th & Cliff.  Odell honorably served in the US Army from May 1952 to April 1954 during the Korean War.  Odell was employed at John Morrell Company and retired with 36 years of service.  Retirement was short when he started working at CNR and A&M as an agricultural parts order person and then as a driver for 17 years for Domino’s Pizza.  During all his working years, Odell’s greatest passion was to provide for his family and to farm his parents 80 acres located near Tea, SD.

On March 18, 1955, he was united in marriage with LaVera (Hagen) Meyer in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple purchased their first home using a VA bill on East 18th Street, and soon became loving parents to their 3 children, LaDell, Mark and Linda.  In 1959, they filled their second home on 41st Street with 3 more children, Myron, Merlyn and Monty.  In 1974, they moved to 37th Street where they lived for 44 years until 2018 when they moved to Independent Living at Ponderosa Retirement home.

Odell raised his family in Christian faith and focused everything he did for his family.  He was a member of the First Church of God (now Rustic Hills Community Church) where he ushered on Sundays, served on church boards, and was a part of Men’s Bible Study, and Couples Cluster Group.  Following his retirement, he continued farming, working with Meals on Wheels, and for 16 years he and LaVera became snowbirds in Texas and Arizona.

Grateful for having shared his life are, his wife, LaVera (Hagen) Meyer of Sioux Falls SD; six children LaDell (Don) Mertens of Sioux Falls, Mark (Rita) Meyer of Sioux Falls, Linda (Bob) Skadsen of Ocala FL, Myron (Pam) Meyer of Sioux Falls, Merlyn (Julie) Meyer of Sioux Falls, Monty (Sandy) Meyer of Harrisburg; 12 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren; a brother Alvin Meyer of Sioux Falls, and a sister Esther Getty of Walker IA; along with a number of brother and sister in-laws, nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.  He is preceded in death by his parents Ole and Katie (Bunjer) Meyer; sister-in-law Marian (Erickson) Meyer; a brother-in-law Harold Getty, and a nephew, Daryl Meyer.

Odell will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.  The family would like to thank everyone for the love and kindness that has been shown, especially to the Sioux Falls VA for all the care that Odell received over the recent years.  Memorials may be directed to Rustic Hills Community Church or the Veterans Honor Internment.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am, Friday, April 25, 2025, at Rustic Hills Community Church, 4500 E Fernwood Dr, Sioux Falls, SD 57110.
