Susann (Wallman) Kleinsasser was born to Frank and Sarah (Tschetter) Wallman on August 6, 1929, on a farm north of Carpenter, SD. Susann’s education was in country schools through the eighth grade. She worked in the kitchen and dining room of St. John’s Hospital, as well as the Service Café in Huron, SD. It was during this time that she met David Kleinsasser, whom she married on November 16, 1947.
Susann made a confession of faith during her early twenties and her faith had been a pillar of strength for her. She taught Sunday School, mid-week classes, and Vacation Bible School. While living in Huron, Susann volunteered for Good News Clubs with Child Evangelism ministries. Over the years, she attended multiple churches but found her home at Abiding Saviors Free Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.
In 1964, David and Susann moved to Sioux Falls. Together, they were owners/operators of D&S Construction (painting and construction clean-up), as well as Klink’s Trucking (hauling mail). Wherever David was, Susann was close by.
For many years, Susann was actively involved with the Union Gospel Mission, first by attending meetings when David served on the Board of Directors, and later as an employee after David’s passing in December of 1988. Susann served for several years on the Union Gospel Mission Auxiliary, as vice-president, treasurer, and historian. She also worked in the Mission’s used clothing store until she retired in May of 2012. After retiring, she devoted her time to helping raise her grandchildren and spending time with family.
Susann was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending her time in the yard caring for her flowers. Her family and friends benefitted from the harvest of her gardens and many were known to bring their “sick” plants to her for a little TLC.
Susann is survived by her two daughters, Connie Kleinsasser and Linda Kleinsasser; five grandchildren, Melody (Troy) Engel, Amanda (Sheku) Bannister, Jeremiah (Lyndsey) Kleinsasser, Joshua (Lily Anderson) Kleinsasser, and Cristena Kleinsasser; eleven great-grandchildren: Kennadi, Carson, Emma, Isaac, Camryn, Maddison, Isabella, Gabriella, Grayson, Harlee and Elijah; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Susann was preceded in death by her husband David; an infant son, David Allen; parents, Frank and Sarah Wallman; step-mother, Susie Wallman; sisters, Gloria Wipf, Helen Wipf, and Rosemary Tschetter; and brothers, Raymond Wallman, Kenneth Wallmann, and Willard Wallman.
