With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Joy Fehrenz, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Ava’s Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family. Joy lived a remarkable life of 92 years.
Verla Joy Fehrenz was born on April 15, 1933, to Charles and Berniece (Kirby) Donaldson in Sioux Falls, where she was raised and cherished. A proud graduate of Washington High School in 1951, Joy's journey continued when she married the love of her life, Kenneth John Fehrenz, on July 4, 1951. Together, they built a beautiful family, welcoming their beloved son, John “Jack,” before ultimately making their way to Arizona.
Joy was passionate about learning and went on to earn her associate's degree from Highline Community College. Her career at Boeing as a computer programmer was filled with accomplishments, eventually leading her to become an analyst manager after 25 years of dedicated service. Beyond her professional achievements, Joy found joy in teaching Business Statistics at Highline Community College, sharing her knowledge and inspiring others along the way.
In her leisure time, Joy delighted in reading and traveling, and she made a meaningful impact as a Girl Scout Volunteer in Arizona. However, what truly brought her the greatest joy was the precious time spent with her family, whose memories she cherished deeply.
A devoted member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and an active participant in Playcrafters in Tucson, Arizona, Joy touched many lives through her warmth and creativity.
She leaves behind her beloved son, Jack (Corina) Fehrenz, and her two treasured granddaughters, Rylee Fehrenz and Logan Fehrenz. Joy's spirit and love will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Joy was preceded in death by her dear parents, Charles and Berniece Donaldson, and her husband, Kenneth Fehrenz, who will be waiting for her with open arms.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, August 25, 2025, with a visitation beginning one hour prior, at Miller Funeral Home – downtown, 507 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57104. Interment to follow at Hills of Rest Cemetery.
