Viola Mae Serreyn was born on May 13, 1932, to William Frank and Hazel (Schneider) Marshall in Mobridge, South Dakota. She grew up on the farm in Timber Lake, South Dakota and graduated from Timber Lake High School. In 1950, she began nurses training through Sioux Valley Nursing School, where she graduated in 1953. She worked as an RN-Physicians Assistant at Sioux Valley Hospital.

On May 18, 1954, Viola was united in marriage to Leo F. Serreyn in Lynd, MN. They resided in Marshall, MN, before moving back to Sioux Falls in 1958, where she worked for a dermatologist over the years. Viola loved to go camping and travel with Leo in their motorhome. They made a coast-to-coast trip visiting almost all of the states. Together, they enjoyed gardening, flowers, and raising potatoes.

Viola was an active member, since 1958, of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she served on several church committees. She also volunteered at Hospice for Sioux Valley/Sanford.

Viola’s hobbies included working crafts, reading, and making lots of Christmas cookies.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sister, Twyla Brandsma of Sioux Falls, SD; and her sister-in-law, Frances Marshall of Timber Lake, SD.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo Serreyn; brothers, Dale (Jean) Marshall, and Glenn Marshall; and brother-in-law, LaMoyne Brandsma.
