Vivian Jean Hofer was born on Friday, June 13th, 1941, in Petersburg, Indiana, to Noble and Imogene Swain. Although many think Friday the 13th is bad luck, Vivian celebrated by making every Friday the 13th a blessed day, full of love, caring, and even a few shenanigans. Vivian graduated in 1959 from Washington High school in Washington, Indiana. Following high school, Vivian worked at Daviess County Hospital, helping to deliver babies and is where her love for children began.

On Nov 1st, 1962, she was united in marriage to John Wineinger in San Diego, California, and was later blessed with two amazing sons, Steve and Ron, but later divorced.

In 1973 the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she spent the remainder of her life with her family and many friends. She spent most of her professional career, 26 years, as a Supervisor at Midland National Life Insurance Company, retiring in 2003. During her later years, she met the love of her life, Jesse Hofer, through friends at church and they were united in a loving marriage in 2001. Vivian had a close relationship with The Lord and was a dedicated member of Faith Temple Church where she attended for 51 years, cleaned for 32 years, and organized “The Living Last Supper for 20 years. Through Faith Temple, Jesse and Vivian were also volunteers at The Food Giveaway for 9 years and will be greatly missed by many.

Vivian’s grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life and even gave her the nickname “Poofy Hair.” There wasn’t a moment that she would turn down to be with them, playing games, coloring, and baking cookies. She had the biggest heart for giving, helping, caring, and loving people, which was what brought her so much joy in her daily life. Some of her other favorite hobbies were making baby blankets and quilts for her grandchildren, reading, traveling, and giving hugs to those who needed it most.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Steve Wineinger (Wendy), Sioux Falls, SD, Ron Wineinger (Dianna), Eugene, OR; four grandchildren, Ashley (Brad) Vostad, Arlington, SD, Tasha Howland, Sioux Falls, SD, Saleah (Kyle) Wineinger, Cami (Adam) Kincaid; and six great-grandchildren, Raylan, Amelia, Westin, Peter, Levi, and Keilana. She was grateful for being “Momma Viv” to Jesse’s seven children, David, Allen, Michael, Linda, Christine, Melody, Sandy; and many grandchildren as well; siblings, Judy (Calvin) Taylor, Dixon, KY, Debbie (Bob) Rach, Mineral Wells, TX, John (Jane) Swain, New Burgh, IN and David (Pat) Swain, Sioux Falls, SD.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Noble and Imogene Swain; her husband, Jesse; her son, Steve and her brother, Jerry.
